You both remind me of the various times I stayed in George Ward.My last visit was for two weeks in 1969 with various injuries and a stomach operation.I found the nurses to be exceptionally good and as you say strict.Their strict behaviour was nothing compared to the Sisters and Matrons.I remember seeing the Ward Sister coming round to inspect the ward,checking the tops of door frames etc for dust and checking our charts and notes.Woe betide the nurses if any details weren't up to date.The Matron was feared and respected by all,even us patients sat to attention when she appeared.At the back of the ward was a small mini ward of about four beds.if you were lucky enough to get a bed here as you began to recover,it was like heaven.We could walk out on to the grass at the back,helping each other if required and wander down towards the nurses swimming pool(well we were all teenagers).It wouldn't be long before Sister Ruby would be standing at the balcony door calling us back and back we came like naughty little five year olds,with the threat of going back to the main ward hanging over us.
